No weight gain but some weight loss

I apologize for not posting about Lil Kiwi's appointment yesterday, however it has been a crazy week here at the Shenanigans' household... Lil Kiwi besides not sleeping has a horrid stuffy nose... Only it's not so much stuffy as it is a flowing mucus river... My days were pretty much wipe nose...throw tissue away... turn around and wipe nose again... repeat... It now seems to be okay during the day but bad at night...

As for her appointment... They asked questions and looked at her... Ordered some tests to be done that they believe will show nothing but want to rule out everything... Otherwise, besides wanting to see a MRI of her spine, they think the problem is not genetic... So, I'm happy that there was no bad news... No good news either really since we still don't know what is wrong but that's okay right now... Monday we go to John Hopkins to see the 2nd Orthopedic Surgeon and maybe get more answers about Lil Kiwi...

Then there is the whole Wee Man issue... I do not even know where to begin with this old problem that has new issues... See I understand that kids do not always want to eat what they are given... I know that getting kids to eat what we (as parents) want them to eat is sometimes tough... Really I know this is a problem for probably 99.99% of parents... My problem is Wee Man has been like this since he was a baby... He was born at 8 lbs. 4 oz. so he was a little heavier than average...

We saw the Nutritionist (who weighed 250+ lbs herself) and got the answer of just slather butter on EVERYTHING and he will gain weight... Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that... Oh wait.. I tried but he still won't eat.... This is when he was about a year old...

Then we moved here and had a new doctor... Told doctor about concern over weight issue and his refusal to eat... Told not to worry all kids go through this... Plus I should be happy that he is underweight and not obese like most of the kids now adays... hmmm yes I guess minus he is a tad more underweight than I would like... So, at 2 1/2 years old Wee Man weighted in at a whopping 32 lbs...

Research.. I'm good at it... So I research if I don't know something or want to know more... I read all the articles about kids and eating... Tips.... Plans... Rules... Then I put them to use... Only one problem... Not a single one has worked.... Back to the doctor for another yearly physical and once again express concerns over Wee Man not gaining weight... Given paperwork about getting PICKY eaters to eat... Hmmm okay...

See the problem is that it really doesn't matter what I do he refuses to eat... examples...
  • offer only food you are having (he will just not eat)
  • set time limit (he will sit until time is over and not eat)
  • offer food choices of A or B (he will want C and then pick either A or B and refuse to eat)
  • offer same food over and over until eaten (he will just not eat for hours/days)
  • give them whatever they want (he will ask for something and then as soon as he has it refuse to eat)
  • etc...
I have tried it all... These past two weeks it has gotten to be more than refusing to eat... Now out of no where he has started to throw up... If he is given something he does not want or if he is told to do something he does not want... Suddenly you hear "OoooOooo I think I'm going to throw up...." then he does a fake cough "oooo see I'm going to throw up" then more fake throw up noises "oooo" then he will eventually throw up...

Thus, I kept him home from school Monday on the off chance that I was wrong and he really was sick... Nothing wrong Tuesday minus him refusing to eat... Same this on Wednesday... Thursday same thing refusing and complaining about what is offered... In fact, I made him eggs for breakfast and gave him the drink he always asks for... know what happened?  He whined that he wanted milk and anything but eggs... I can't win.. Anyways I digress... So, the day is normal until it was bedtime... I inform him it is time to get ready for bed and suddenly....

"OOOOooo my tummy.... I think I might throw up...." Wee Man weakly states..
"Don't you even start this... You didn't say a word until just now..." Momma strongly states..
"ooo it's because Lil Kiwi touched me just now and now I'm sick.. (gag...gag...) see I'm going to throw up" Wee Man overly dramatic...

Once I explained that getting sick doesn't happen THAT fast he was suddenly fine... That is until DH got home... Then it started again and yes he did throw up in the bathroom sink....

First thing this morning I called for a doctor appointment... Another missed day of school.... Bloodwork to rule out things (although the Dr. is sure there will be nothing there) .... Her (and my) theory... Wee Man is fighting for Power and might have a under lying food aversion.... Two weeks and some changes at home to see if things are different and if not off to a *gasp* Head Doctor!!! As of today, my 5 year old son weighs in at 34 lbs... Yep... in three years he has only gained TWO pounds... I believe my concern has merit... In fact, he lost a pound since his appointment in August..

I totally see the Power plays Wee Man does... The problem (and I will be in trouble for saying this) is DH... It doesn't matter what rules I put into play IF everyone doesn't follow them... DH will give Wee Man a small bite of something here and there... Or a sip of something.... All when he isn't suppose to be.... As soon as Wee Man gets that bite or sip the first thing he does is....

*huge poo eating grin* "DH gave me a bite/sip of this... HA HA (think the laugh Nelson does on the Simpsons) "

When I made a comment to DH about him being part of the problem well that got me a big head shake and uh-huh.... He doesn't see it like that... ARGGGGG

I do see where DH is coming from... I really really realllllly do... If Wee Man isn't eating then he loses weight... However, giving in to him isn't helping...

It looks like it is going to be a long two weeks...

Anyone have ideas I haven't tried yet? I'm at my wits end here...

  1. I can sympathize with you with eating issues. My 3.5yo daughter weighs a whopping 27lbs (the same as her little brother), and has gained all of 0.4lbs over the past 7 months. Actually, she probably hasn't even gained that since that's her weight with clothes on and I think her 3yo weight was without clothes...thankfully we don't have the throwing up issue (yet, at least).

The thing that is working for me right now is to put healthy foods out in a muffin tin (inspired by the Muffin Tin Monday posts I see on blogs) and just let her eat when she wants. She's not eating a ton, but it's more than she was doing before, and since I chose what to put in the tins for her I can make sure she only eats healthy food. If you come up with any other brilliant solutions, I would love to hear them!

  2. Wow, I have no clue what help I can offer. I wish I could! I can see your concern, and wish that the doctors had taken you seriously before now! I'll add this to my prayers and trust that things will change somehow! Hugs!

  3. I wish I had any ideas or tips, but I am not a Mommy. I don't now much about kiddos, regarding this type of thing. Are there maybe online forums or groups you can join, to ask other moms who might be going through a similar situation? ((hugs))
